JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Twenty years ago August 30, Hurricane Katrina was still having a devastating effect on the Jackson area.

It was blazing hot outside, and many people had no air-conditioning or refrigeration because the electricity was out. That led to huge demand for ice, but stores either sold out quickly or had to close because they, too, had no power.

WLBT and other broadcasters would alert the public whenever a store got a fresh supply of ice, and a large crowd would line up to get some. Police had to be called to keep order at the Jackson Ice House on Jefferson Street…
