Jackson Public Schools reveals $4.4M upgrade to career center

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Public School District (JPS) invested $4.4 million in major upgrades to its Career Development Center (CDC).

According to JPS officials, the center now boasts state-of-the-art classrooms and industry-standard labs across 23 career pathways, giving students hands-on experiences in fields such as health science, sports medicine, barbering and cosmetology, TV production, and other skilled trades.

Officials said students can earn industry certifications, dual credit, and the ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate while completing four Carnegie units toward graduation.

The major upgrades include:

  • Barbering & Cosmetology: Modernized labs with updated styling and shampoo stations, specialized flooring, and improved lighting—designed to meet state board regulations while creating a professional atmosphere.
  • Health Science & Sports Medicine: A new “Mock Clinic” prepares scholars for certifications such as Certified Nursing Assistant and Phlebotomy, while the Sports Medicine lab trains them in rehabilitation and exercise science.
  • TV Production Studio: The new WCDC-TV studio replicates an industry-standard broadcast space, complete with anchor desk, interview stage, green screen, control room, and professional editing suites.

To showcase the renovations, JPS will host Family Night at the CDC on September 30, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
