Residents weigh in on Jackson Police Department’s next chief

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson has formed a search committee to find the next chief of police and gather input from residents.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade announced his retirement in August 2025. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones is serving as the interim police chief of the Jackson Police Department (JPD).

On Tuesday, the first of four public forums was held at Forest Hill High School. Residents were encouraged to share their perspectives on public safety priorities, leadership qualities and the future of JPD.

“It’s critical. It’s critical because, we don’t know what they’re thinking, right? We don’t know what the discussions that are going on, you know, at the water coolers or in the coffee shops or at home while people are having dinner,” said Dr. Ken Wilson, the facilitator of the forums.

  • Monday, September 29 – Jackson Medical Mall, Community Room, 350 West Woodrow Wilson Ave., Jackson, MS
  • Tuesday, September 30 – First Presbyterian Church, Miller Hall, 1390 N. State St., Jackson, MS
