City seeks help in collecting debts

Those who owe past due fines and other debts to the City of Clinton could see the money taken out of their next state income tax refund.

At its October 7 meeting, the Board of Aldermen approved a contract with the Municipal Intercept Company, LLC (MIC) to serve as a collection organization, working with the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR) to recover the debts.

In 2019, the Mississippi Legislature passed the Local Government Debt Collection Setoff Act (HB 991), which authorizes the process MIC uses. The Mississippi Municipal League created MIC to facilitate the process, acting as go-between for local governments and MDOR…
