JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – There is a painting at the Two Mississippi Museums by Hector Boldo. The name of the painting is Día De Los Muertos Celebration.
Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition, but it’s celebrated worldwide.
“It is very recognizable. I think mostly here in the United States. People recognize the sugar skulls, the the beautiful, decorated skeletons. But it is actually has a lot of deep meaning. And here we see La Calavera Catrina. That’s the name of the bearded fleet skeleton. And it you can trace her origins back to 1910,” explained Ivette Ray, Curatorial Services director at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH). “And she was actually made famous by the famous muralist, Diego Rivera. He was married to Frida Kahlo. Most people know who she is, but he is also very famous worldwide for his murals. And he is the one that gave her the name Catrina. And now she is a part of Día De Los Muertos.”…
