Mississippi Freedom Trail marker honors civil rights lawyers

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A new Mississippi Freedom Trail marker was unveiled on the historic Farish Street in Jackson.

The marker, which was unveiled on November 14, 2025, honors three attorneys, R. Jess Brown, Carsie Hall Sr., and Jack Young Sr., who used the power of the law to challenge segregation and defend those arrested for standing up for freedom. Their offices were located above the Big Apple Inn.

According to the Mississippi Humanities Council (MHC), the attorneys represented activists in landmark cases involving voting rights, school desegregation, and the Freedom Riders.

“Their partnership with Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund helped lay the groundwork for lasting change across Mississippi and beyond,” the MHC said.
