D’Lo, Mississippi, the tiny town that responded to WWII like no other

D’Lo is a small town in Simpson County that isn’t talked about a lot. It has a population of about 400 people and other than the D’Lo Water Park, there aren’t many reasons for outsiders to go there.

But for many people who have roots in D’Lo, there is a sense of pride in the town. It is pride in a generation of people who are now gone — a generation who didn’t hesitate to defend their country and way of life.

When America was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941, and forced into World War II, volunteers stepped up from throughout the nation to join the military, but in D’Lo, practically every able-bodied man volunteered for military service. By the end of the war, roughly 33% of the residents had served their country…
