Inmate bites, assaults detention officer at Rankin County Jail: authorities

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A detention officer at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center was injured by an inmate, according to investigators.

The incident occurred at the facility around 8:00 p.m. on December 8, 2025.

Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, said Sgt. Stephanie Dodd responded to a disturbance at the cell of Monica Gandy, who had been indicted on the charges of retaliation against a public servant and attempted grand larceny.

According to Burnell, Gandy refused verbal commands, and when Dodd opened the cell door, Gandy began punching the detention officer. After the two fell to the ground, Burnell said Gandy bit off a portion of Dodd’s eyelid/eyebrow.

Gandy was charged with assault on a county jail officer. Her bond on the new charge was set at $100,000…
