Jackson shelters provide refuge as temperatures drop

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – With freezing temperatures gripping Jackson, shelters have stepped up to help keep people safe.

The cold weather made conditions dangerous for anyone without reliable heat or housing. Shelter managers said they want to make sure no one is left outside during the below freezing nights. They’re also encouraging residents to donate bedding and toiletry needs.

Which cold weather shelters will be open in Jackson?

“Our normal capacity is 40 beds, but in times of intense heat and extreme cold, we’ll convert our chapel into an annex dorm and will add 15 to 20 additional cots and mattresses and so on, so as to accommodate the increase in our numbers during those times,” explained Gerald Snell, senior shelter manager at Gateway Rescue Mission.

Shelter managers said they’ll continue to adjust services as needed.
