Mississippians struggle to keep New Year’s resolutions

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Setting new goals for the new year is usually a tall order, but polling data revealed that the task is particularly difficult for Mississippians.

Using data from 2023, PlayStar looked to see how well Americans stuck to their New Year’s Resolutions. Based on responses from more than 2,000 Americans nationwide, one in five abandoned their new goals within a week. By the end of the year, 63% (more than three in five) had thrown in the towel. Instead of the national average of 37%, roughly a third of Mississippians were still fulfilling their New Year’s resolution by the end of the year. That was the eighth-lowest share nationally.

Roughly three in five Mississippi respondents pledged to spend less money or save more over the course of the year. About half pledged to go to the gym more, and 38% pledged to drink more water. Finances, habits, and systems in place before the new year will likely affect the outcomes of many Mississippians trying to better themselves in 2026. The state is often at or near the bottom nationally for financial stability and physically active adults. Issues with the Jackson water system have also plagued the capital city for years.

Americans’ top New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, according to a new survey

PlayStar’s findings do not appear to be isolated. WalletHub predicted in January that, among major cities, Jackson would be the least likely to keep its resolutions. Though its predictions for 2026 have not been released, the website previously left the following tips for Jacksonians to stay on track for new goals for the new year:
