Severe Storms Possible Friday as Cold Front Sweeps Through Central MS

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) -A First Alert Weather Day is in effect for Friday as a strong cold front moves into central Mississippi, bringing multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms to the Jackson area. The greatest risk for severe weather is Friday afternoon through Friday night, though storms may begin as early as Friday morning and continue into early Saturday before the front fully clears.

The atmosphere will be warm, windy, and unstable, with strong south winds gusting up to 30 mph ahead of the front. Damaging wind gusts remain the primary severe threat, but hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and isolated tornadoes are also possible. Rainfall totals are expected to average around 1 inch, with locally higher amounts in areas where storms repeatedly track over the same locations.

Once the front passes early Saturday, cooler and much drier air moves in. Winds will stay gusty through the weekend, shifting to the north. Temperatures will fall sharply, with highs dropping into the 50s by Sunday, and near-freezing to below-freezing lows possible by Monday morning…
