HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A man pled guilty in connection to a fatal arson that claimed the lives of two of his roommates in Byram.

On April 9, 2023, Owens said Perez set fire to the home he shared with other tenants in the 700 block of Gary Drive following a fight. During the attack, police said Perez doused multiple victims with gasoline and ignited a lighter, causing the structure to become fully engulfed in flames.

Byram firefighters and AMR personnel treated several victims suffering from severe burn injuries and transported them to the hospital. Firefighters conducted a search and found the remains of Filibert Torres, 77. Two days later, Jose Juarez, 45, died from his injuries.

According to Owens, surviving victims told police that the fire had been deliberately set by Perez.
