Handgun confiscated from student at Callaway High School

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with Jackson Public Schools (JPS) said a handgun was confiscated from a student at Callaway High School.

According to JPS, the district’s EVOLV security screening system alerted staff to a concealed handgun in the student’s waistband when the student entered the high school on January 22, 2026. They said the weapon was secured without incident.

There were no injuries, and there was no ongoing threat to the school, officials said.

“The safety and well-being of our scholars will always be our top priority. The District maintains a zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus. Any scholar found in possession of a weapon is subject to disciplinary action and possible criminal charges, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct,” said Sherwin Johnson, executive director of JPS Public Engagement.
