C Spire has pledged $5 million to support construction of a new Mississippi Cancer Center and Research Institute, a project aimed at expanding cancer treatment, research and patient care across the state.
The state-of-the-art, five-story facility will be built adjacent to UMMC’s campus in Jackson and is designed to bring advanced cancer care closer to home for Mississippians. Each year, nearly 16,000 people in Mississippi are diagnosed with cancer, and about 6,500 die from the disease, giving the state the highest cancer mortality rate in the nation.
The gift adds to more than $88 million raised in just over a year toward construction of the center, which will expand access to cutting-edge therapies, clinical trials and multidisciplinary care…
