Canton High School integration pioneer reflects on breaking barriers 60 years ago

CANTON, Miss. (WLBT) – Mary Smith-Blackmon still sees familiar faces when she flips through her 1966 Canton High School yearbook, including some who made her senior year difficult.

“I see some I know… I see the ones that stomped at me, kicked at my chair,” Smith-Blackmon said.

In 1965, Smith-Blackmon, Bobbie Ruth Chinn, and Phill George were the only students to sign on and desegregate Canton’s predominantly white public school. They transferred from Rogers High, the Black high school on the other side of town…
