Jackson residents divided over water system legislation

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson residents shared their thoughts on a bill that would create a new board to manage the capital city’s water system.

The opinion on House Bill 1677 was divided among Jackson residents and the City Council. Many said they’re frustrated, arguing there’s been a lack of transparency throughout the process.

“But I do have a message for our politicians out there,” said Councilman Vernon Hartley, Ward 5. “How dare you bring something to us without going to the public? How dare you bring something without the public comments?”

His comments reflected a larger concern, that no major decision about the city’s water system should be made without public input. While some said Monday’s public hearing was helpful, others argued it wasn’t enough time for a decision of this magnitude…
