‘It used to be vibrant.’ The vacant house problem fueling fires in Jackson

Around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 4, 2025, flames from an abandoned house were “so tall it was up in the trees,” recalled Tracy Cooper, who lives two houses down from the now entirely burned-down house.

Today, only one corner of that house — located at 4221 Oakmont Drive — is still standing. The rest looked like the aftermath of an explosion. The structure completely collapsed into a blackened pile of ash and debris.

What was left of furniture and keepsakes lay scattered across the ground, burned beyond recognition, as if the fire had chewed through every room and spit the remains into the yard…
