‘No Mississippian goes hungry’: Local mayors fight hunger one can at a time during March of the Mayors

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – More than 22,000 food items were packed into boxes Wednesday at Christ United Church in Jackson as part of the sixth annual March of the Mayors, a statewide initiative aimed at fighting food insecurity across Mississippi.

Sixty-one mayors across the state spent the last several weeks collecting shelf-stable food items from their communities. Cities each collected a designated item — from canned soup and tuna to spaghetti noodles and rice — before coming together for a series of large-scale regional packing events.
