JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Nearly four and a half years after Jackson’s Animal Control Shelter closed its doors, the stray animal crisis gripping the capital city is only getting worse — and the nonprofits left to pick up the slack say they are overwhelmed, underfunded, and out of space.
The shelter shut down in October 2021 amid reports of inhumane conditions, inadequate cleaning, and failure to meet even the most basic standards of animal care. Since then, shelter experts estimate Jackson now has nearly two animals for every three people, and that’s not even counting cats.
“In a word, it has overwhelmed all of us,” said Valerie Hicks, Board President for the Community Animal Rescue & Adoption in Jackson. “We’re all full. And not having animal control in the capital city has really hurt.”…
