Mississippi’s roads second-worst in US: report

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Bad roads seem to be a problem cited by most Americans, but a recent report revealed that it is particularly true in Mississippi.

The state’s roads have been a problem across the metro and state for years. Coupled with higher rates of road fatalities and accidents, it makes for a bad mix for most Mississippi motorists. According to ConsumerAffairs’ Journal of Consumer Research, the state has the second-worst roadways in the nation.

Almost half of Mississippi’s urban roads and more than a quarter of all rural roads are in poor condition; those are the eighth and fourth-worst numbers nationally. This implicates metropolitan centers like Jackson, Meridian, the Pine Belt and the Mississippi Coast. However, many of the country and rural roads in between all of these major cities are also in need of improvement.

The state does not have a shortage of road funding, according to the website. In fact, the first $80 million generated every fiscal year by the state lottery goes to infrastructure.
