Rural Madison County communities push for public sewer system

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Drive northeast through Madison County and the landscape changes quickly. Fewer businesses, fewer homes, and no public sewer system. For residents in communities like Camden, Farmhaven, and Sharon, that missing infrastructure has meant decades of limited growth, dwindling school enrollment, and a shortage of basic amenities.

“We don’t have grocery stores. We don’t have accessible gas stations in the area. Kind of like your mom-and-pop businesses, those things that really help develop a good community,” said Timmy Pickett, a Farmhaven resident.

District 5 Supervisor Paul Griffin is pushing a proposal that would extend public sewer lines roughly 30 miles from Canton to those rural communities. Engineers estimate the project would cost between $14 million and $20 million. The county is pursuing a mix of USDA grants, bonds and other funding sources to pay for it…
