‘We decided it’s best’: Five Points pizzeria closes. Here’s what’s next for the space

After four years, a one-of-a-kind Five Points pizzeria known for its idiocentric decor and fun ambiance as much as its menu has evolved into a private event space.

Sun-Ray Cinema’s Pizza Cave, 1018 Park St., shut its doors as a stand-alone, dine-in restaurant on Saturday. Effective immediately, the brick-and-mortar restaurant is “strictly a private event space,” the owners announced on social media saying “we decided it’s best.’

“Birthday parties in the cave? Yeah! Live shows? Maybe!” the Facebook post noted of possible gatherings at the venue.

Pizza Cave is an extension of the landmark Sun-Ray Cinema movie theater just two doors away at 1028 Park St.

Opened in January 2020, Pizza Cave showcased the most popular dishes from the movie theater’s kitchen. Topping the menu was freshly made pizza as well as vegan and vegetarian fare.

Theater co-owners-turned-restaurateurs Tim Massett and Shana David-Massett previously told the Times-Union they were inspired to open the restaurant due to the popularity of the theater’s food.
