Mark Woods: Presidential drama dominates everything, but local matters still matter

My perennial Monday morning question: What am I going to write about this week?

On this Monday, the day after the presidential campaign took another dramatic twist, I have to admit it was hard to get excited about writing about some of the things on the local calendar: C ity Council meetings , the next step in the community benefits portion of the Jaguars agreement, the decades-long saga of the Laura Street Trio, School Board races, homelessness, repairs to the water main break on San Jose Boulevard, zoning issues, and who knows what else.

How could I write about any of these when it seemed like all anyone — including myself — was talking about was the presidential race?

But I went ahead and started the day by listening to WJCT’s First Coast Connect with Anne Schindler, partly to hear what came after a discussion of presidential politics: Cindy Pearson , the District 3 school board member, talking about our schools and the upcoming School Board election.

I had hoped to make it to a morning press conference at City Hall where Mayor Donna Deegan announced the city’s plans to tackle homelessness and address Florida HB 1365 — the state law that, starting in October, will make it illegal to sleep in public spaces.
