Labor Day is coming: What stores, restaurants and offices will be open?

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City in 1882 as labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize American workers’ contributions.

By 1894, 23 states had adopted the observance and that year President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday, according to the U.S. Department of Labor . And on Monday, Sept. 2, 142 years after the first event, the latest Labor Day will be celebrated nationwide.

Most schools, offices and banks will be closed for the three-day weekend, as will the U.S. Postal Service. So lots of people will be traveling and lots of other people shopping Labor Day sales.

Most retail and grocery stores, restaurants and pharmacies will be open . But some may have special holiday hours so call or check ahead.

When is Labor Day this year?
