If we go strictly by depth chart projections, nobody overcame the odds to make the 53-man roster more than Esezi Otomewo.
Esezi made the most of every opportunity. From recording 1 ½ sacks against the Kansas City Chiefs and then getting another quarterback sack against Tampa Bay, it seemed like he just wanted it more than his opponents.
You can tell by listening to Trent Baalke and Doug Pederson that they were impressed by Esezi’s efforts this training camp.
On what they like about DT Esezi Otomewo
Pederson: For me too it goes back to last year, having him here last year. What we saw every day going against our offensive line. He’s a big, powerful, lengthy guy with some athleticism. That showed up in camp. Just his skill set fits the scheme and he’s done a nice job.
On if DT Esezi Otomewo making the roster shows how important practice squad players are
Pederson: Yeah, like Trent said, kind of the next man up. If there is an injury, next guy up. We didn’t have that last year, but he was ready to go. A guy like him that was on our roster competing every day last year came in this year ready to go, eager to make the team.
