Death penalty trial: Jurors convict Clay County contractor in upset customer’s murder

Jurors deliberated about four hours to convict a Fleming Island contractor Monday of killing a 65-year-old woman who was upset with his work and then dumping her body in a landfill. Next they will decide if Corey Louis Binderim, 49, should get the death penalty.

Susan Elizabeth Mauldin had been reported missing in October 2019 after complaining to several people about paying $12,000 to Binderim to renovate her Eagle Harbor home’s bathroom, but he stopped showing up for scheduled work days after demolishing it, according to an arrest warrant. She wanted her money back and threatened to call the police and sue him.

Her car was still at home and she had not made any travel plans or been in contact with any friends after vanishing. Three months later Mauldin’s skeletal remains were found during an extensive search in a Georgia landfill. She had been strangled, it was determined.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said its investigation led to Binderim through store purchases, security video in Mauldin’s neighborhood and her cellphone records.
