Jacksonville mother arrested for toddler’s drug-related death

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — A Jacksonville mother has been arrested following the death of her 2-year-old son from a drug overdose, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Melissa Rae Harper, age 43, is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.In March 2024, Harper brought her unresponsive son to a local emergency room, where he died shortly after arrival. An autopsy revealed the toddler succumbed to a combined drug intoxication of fentanyl and xylazine.
