Jacksonville Man Sentenced to 30 Months for Providing a Destructive Device to Convicted Felon

A Jacksonville man has been sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison following a guilty plea for the possession and transfer of a destructive device to a convicted felon. Shane Allen Gibson, 45, received his sentence from U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gibson was arrested after an incident on April 20, 2023, when he gave a homemade explosive bomb to an individual who was known to be a convicted felon. Tests later proved that the device was a destructive device under federal law, containing explosive powder and “numerous screws and fasteners within an arial shell and pyrotechnic fuse,” as described by the Assistant United States Attorney Rachel Lasry. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found that the device was capable of causing “blast, thermal, and fragmentation effects” upon detonation.
