An inmate at Duval County Jail identified as Jaymin Winn, 30, died in a Jacksonville hospital following a medical emergency experienced ahead of his court appearance, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported. As detailed in a First Coast News release, Winn began showing “medical distress” early Wednesday, ahead of a transition for a court appearance. Corrections personnel and jail medical staff provided immediate medical aid before Winn was transferred to the jail’s clinic, and subsequently to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The cause of death is still under investigation, with no declared cause until an autopsy is completed. Winn was booked into custody on Monday on allegations of drug-related offenses, his confinement lasting just over two days. According to News4Jax, detectives from the JSO Cold Case Unit are leading the inquiry into Winn’s death with assistance from the Medical Examiner’s Office. They have yet to release further specifics related to the incident.
The circumstances surrounding Winn’s medical emergency and the jail’s response are expected to be focus points of the investigation. Immediate reports from officers on the scene indicated a swift reaction to Winn’s distress. “Officers in the area, realizing this, immediately reported the medical emergency via the radio,” JSO stated in the press release obtained by First Coast News. No known contacts between Winn, other inmates, or officers have been reported at this time…
