700 Juveniles Cause Disturbance in Jacksonville’s Southbank, One Arrested with Firearm

Over the weekend, Jacksonville’s Southbank area, usually known for its scenic walks and calming river views, was the scene of a disruptive gathering. Close to 700 juveniles caused a disturbance at Friendship Fountain Park, prompting a response from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO). According to a statement from JSO, the group’s behavior included drug use, fights, and some individuals even went as far as to pepper-spray each other.

The juvenile crowd had gathered in response to a so-called “takeover” event that had been planned and circulated on social media. The JSO had monitored these plans and had tried to preemptively deter the organizers by warning them and their parents not to host the unpermitted event. However, as the night progressed, the number of participants swelled, and behaviors became increasingly disorderly.

As the public park’s closing time approached and the situation turned more chaotic, officers were compelled to firmly and safely disperse the juveniles from the area. In one alarming incident, a young individual was seen reaching into his backpack as he tried to flee the scene. He was swiftly apprehended, and officers found a firearm in his possession, leading to his arrest. The JSO took additional measures to prevent the dispersed crowd from regrouping, including the blocking of nearby roads such as the Main Street Bridge, using sirens to effectively manage the scene…
