JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—In recognition of Overdose Awareness Month, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Overdose Death Investigations Unit (OIU) announced that it has made more arrests for overdose deaths this year while the number of overall overdose deaths has decreased.
The OIU highlighted a recent case in which detectives arrested Jacob Johnson, 42, in June. Johnson was identified as a suspect after an investigation into a fatal overdose in February. He is now in the Duval County jail facing a Manslaughter charge and several drug charges.
According to the JSO, the unit arrested 52 people for overdose deaths between January and July 2025, an increase of 13 arrests compared to the same period in 2024. In the same timeframe, the city saw a reduction in the number of overdose deaths, with 157 in 2025 compared to 195 in 2024…
