Two Arrested for Violating Halo Law After Woman Attacks Officer Outside Jacksonville School

Jacksonville, FL – Three people were arrested and a fourth juvenile taken into custody after a violent confrontation outside a charter school led to violations of Florida’s Halo Law, which protects first responders from interference while performing their duties.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), officers responded to the school on Bassett Road on October 7, 2025, after 39-year-old Erika McGriff left her vehicle illegally parked and running in an intersection while picking up her child. When Officer Holton approached to discuss the matter, McGriff allegedly escalated the encounter, punching and biting the officer during the struggle.

Two bystanders, 59-year-old Anita Gibson and 36-year-old Jasmine Jefferson, then violated the Halo Law (Statute 343.31) by crowding and harassing the officer, refusing to stay the legally required 25 feet away as he tried to detain McGriff. Both were arrested for interfering with law enforcement…
