A former mail carrier from Jacksonville is now facing the possibility of up to a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to the theft of government property. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida has confirmed that Delvenia Renee Mitchell, 54, admitted to using a United States Postal Service (USPS) gas card for personal gain, filling up tanks far outside her delivery area and beyond what her official vehicle could even hold. According to the press release by U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe, despite the guilty plea, a date for Mitchell’s sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
The case unfolded as investigators from the USPS – Office of Inspector General sifted through evidence and found that in 2023, Mitchell carried out a series of fuel purchases not just in her assigned domain of Jacksonville, but elsewhere too. This activity set off alarms as it stretched well beyond the logistical norms for a postal delivery vehicle’s fuel usage.
