An officer-involved shooting that took place on December 16, 2025, on Bradd Avenue in Jacksonville has recently been brought under public scrutiny. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released a video and details concerning the tense standoff that culminated in the injury of 31-year-old Cory Sweeney, who was subsequently hospitalized and arrested on multiple charges, including Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Domestic Battery. The incident began unfolding the prior evening, when Sweeney’s mother dialed 911 to report he was threatening her with violence. The dispatcher overheard the threats being made, and the call was ended abruptly. When contacted again, Sweeney responded with further threats. Patrol officers were quickly deployed to the address provided, discovering that the mother had safely exited the home. She recounted to the law enforcement officers that Sweeney had threatened to stab and kill her, brandishing a knife. Efforts to coax Sweeney out became prolonged; the standoff stretched out over approximately four hours, during which he threatened to hurt or kill the officers in attendance and at one juncture, emerged wearing a football helmet and wielding a hammer before retreating back into the house.
Due to the escalation and Sweeney’s refusal to surrender, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT Team was called in to assist. Despite continuous negotiations, Sweeney remained uncooperative.
