Trailblazing Director Jennifer Short Retires After 27 Years with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) announced the retirement of Jennifer Short, Director of Police Services, following 27 years in law enforcement. Short, who joined JSO in 1999, was the first Native American appointed to the Sheriff’s Staff in 2017 and has been recognized for her longstanding service and trailblazing career.

Short previously served as a sergeant and lieutenant before her historic appointment. Under Sheriff Waters, she was promoted to Chief in 2022 and later to Director in 2024. In her role, Short oversaw the Department of Police Services, managing operational needs for both officers and civilians in Jacksonville.
