MLK Day will halt governments, mail, but most stores, eateries open

The legacy of slain civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated across the Jacksonville area Jan. 19 with multiple events on the the national holiday that bears his name.

All federal offices will be closed, as will state and local governments, schools, banks and the stock market. But most area grocery stores, restaurants and retailers will be open on the holiday. And garbage collection will run as usual.

Will Jacksonville-area government offices be open on MLK Day?

No. Federal, state and local offices will be closed.

Will Jacksonville-area schools be open on MLK Day?

No, public schools will be closed, as will most private schools and colleges.

Will Jacksonville-area garbage and recyclables be picked up on MLK Day?

Yes. Collection routes will run normally in Jacksonville, as well as Clay, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties.

Will mail be delivered in the Jacksonville area on MLK Day?

U.S. Postal Services offices will be closed so regular mail will not be delivered. But the Postal Service’s Priority Mail, which is delivered 365 days a year, will not be affected.

Will FedEx and UPS deliver on MLK Day?

FedEx will deliver, but there may be modified operations…
