JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — City of Jacksonville Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Yanira “Yaya” Cardona has been placed on administrative leave amid a city review on comments she made on an Instagram livestream Wednesday, during which she warned her followers about the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city.
In the Instagram live, Cardona claimed that ICE was placing speed traps around the city, and stated that immigration officers have been seen on Emerson Street, Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard. She added that authorities are targeting lawn care companies, A/C companies and “construction vans,” and stopping them to make sure they have their necessary paperwork.
“These are difficult times,” Cardona said during the live. “I know everyone wants to fight. Unfortunately, this isn’t the time to fight. If you get pulled over, as much as we want to huff and puff, please comply. If you have lawyers, please have your plan in place with your lawyers. If you have family, if you have kids, businesses, get a power of attorney to somebody you trust and love.”…
