Jacksonville businessman pleads guilty to evading millions in federal taxes

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — A Jacksonville businessman has admitted to evading millions in federal income taxes over a 13-year period. Phillip Mak, a sales representative, pleaded guilty to the charges, according to court documents.

Mak, who earned more than $10 million from 2008 to 2020, owed over $3.7 million in federal taxes but failed to pay them, despite receiving notices from the IRS, according to a press release from the Justice Department. By the end of 2021, Mak had not paid any federal income tax for the previous 13 years.

To avoid payment, Mak transferred $1 million to his domestic partner and moved ownership of his residence to a trust controlled by the partner. He also created a corporate entity to deposit his personal income, actions he admitted were intended to evade taxes, the Justice Department stated…
