68-Year-Old Man Wounded, Arrested After Officer-Involved Shooting in Jacksonville

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has shared details and footage pertaining to an officer-involved shooting incident that took place on Creeks Ridge Road earlier this month. The confrontation led to the injury of 68-year-old Ofero Manalon, who was then arrested for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The initial report outlines the events leading to the shooting.

On January 5, a local resident reported hearing a gunshot and upon investigation, observed Sherwin Manalon, Ofero’s son, in a nearby garage with a rifle. Law enforcement was called, and upon arrival, ordered Sherwin to drop the weapon and subsequently handcuffed him. This is when Ofero Manalon, Sherwin’s father, escalated the situation by aiming the rifle at the officers, resulting in officers G. Hernandez, M. Ross and Q. Kincaid discharging their service weapons and wounding Ofero Manalon, who retreated back into the house and initiated a standoff with JSO SWAT.

Following several hours of attempted negotiation, the SWAT team was forced to deploy gas to coax Manalon out, eventually apprehending him with assistance of a trained canine. On the scene paramedics immediately transported him to a local hospital where he was reported to be stable. The footage from the incident, which has been described as graphic and is intended for mature audiences only, can be viewed on the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office social media platforms…
