Nearly two years after Jacksonville rapper Julio Foolio was gunned down during his birthday weekend in Tampa, the four men convicted in the killing have officially avoided the death penalty. The decision closes another major chapter in one of Florida’s most closely watched rap murder cases.
On Thursday, a Hillsborough County jury recommended life sentences for Davion Murphy, Rashad Murphy, Sean Gathright, and Isaiah Chance after previously convicting all four men of first degree murder and conspiracy charges tied to the June 2024 ambush that killed Foolio, whose real name was Charles Jones II. Prosecutors argued the shooting was a coordinated retaliatory hit connected to a long-running Jacksonville gang feud involving rival groups ATK and 1200, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Investigators said Jones was tracked across Tampa during his 26th birthday celebrations before gunmen opened fire outside a Holiday Inn parking lot in the early morning hours of June 23, 2024. Surveillance footage, cellphone records, Instagram activity, and text messages became key evidence during the weeks-long trial. Three other people were injured in the shooting. Alicia Andrews, who allegedly helped the men coordinate the attack, was scheduled to be sentenced after being convicted of manslaughter last October.
