At Jersey City BOE Town Hall, special ed advocates largely stay home out of protest

The Jersey City Board of Education yesterday held a community outreach committee meeting and town hall on Section 504 and Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) under special education, but advocates largely stayed home out of protest.

Trustee Natalia Ioffe, the chair of the committee, told the audience that she has relayed to special education parents some of the reforms adopted by the board at the past few meetings.

Ioffe added she had legal counsel explain to the parents the set of existing policies and how they can be revised in order to strengthen issues around special education, such as staff training and compliance, in addition to comparing and contrasting IEPs and 504s.

“I look forward to continue reporting through my committee on how those policies will be revised and how the standard operating procedures … with regard to training and staff will be perfected and revised in order to streamline the approaches to the 504s and IEPs,” Ioffe said…
