Jersey City CFO: 2025 audit will be released soon, showing what led to budget crisis

The 2025 financial audit of Jersey City will soon be released and outline the budgetary problems that led to a massive hole in the upcoming municipal budget, according to Finance Director Bill Viqueira.

Viqueira made the announcement during Ward E Councilwoman Eleana Little’s contentious town hall yesterday where she committed to voting yes to a 15 percent tax rate on the third quarter tax bills, as HCV first reported.

He presented the expenses and revenues in the 2026 municipal budget totaling over $874 million that necessitate a 15 percent tax increase, down from Mayor James Solomon’s initial proposal of a 20 percent tax hike that was postponed.

“You will know if you go through those … that previous administrations knew their problems and just chose to ignore them and do nothing about them,” Viqueira said, noting that the 2025 audit will be made public alongside prior audits and corrective action reports…
