The Jersey City Rent Protection Special Investigation Committee heard concerns from residents in several LeFrak-owned properties in Newport, specifically about potentially losing their rent control status due to the expiration of a 30-year tax abatement.
“We got hit by a notice that the landlord doesn’t participate anymore in the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Financing Agency and therefore the rents, they’re going to go up to market rate,” Manny Amvinbons said, indicating this would lead to a massive rental spike.
“I am here to give a voice to the senior citizens like my mom. My mom is 90 years old and has dementia …They’re going to get evicted.”
