Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle by Union Police Ends in Arrest of Two Newark Men

UNION, NJ – Union police officers arrested two Newark men following a vehicle pursuit involving a stolen vehicle, police say.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Union police detectives located a stolen 2017 Hyundai Elantra which had been used in multiple motor vehicle burglaries earlier in the afternoon in the area of Springfield Road. The vehicle was reported stolen in Piscataway earlier Tuesday morning.

According to police, a pursuit ensued after the detectives located the vehicle in the parking lot of the Lowe’s Home Improvement store. The pursuit was terminated after the suspect’s vehicle became disabled on Rt. 22 east near the border of Hillside and Newark.

Police say the driver of the stolen vehicle, Devon Reid, 30, of Newark, was charged with second degree eluding and third degree receiving a stolen vehicle. The passenger, Khael Bishop, 23, also of Newark, was charged with third degree receiving a stolen vehicle.

Charges related to the motor vehicle burglaries are still pending as the investigation continues. In addition, Millburn police are investigating several motor vehicle burglaries which occurred in their jurisdiction involving the same Elantra.
