Jersey City, NJ, has initiated a city-run Animal Care and Control service. This service aims to improve the treatment and enforcement for animals in need. Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and community members have supported this transition. The new service offers 24/7 operations, on-site dog licensing, adoptions, extended public access hours, and a volunteer program.

The city assumed control of animal care and shelter operations on January 1, 2024. The first month of operation saw many adoptions and lost pets returned to their families. HHS Director Stacey Flanagan acknowledged the team’s efforts in moving animal control services in-house and training staff.

The transition has led to the care of 48 dogs and 39 cats. There have been seven adoptions, 100 animals spayed/neutered, and seven dogs returned to their families. The Animal Control division has issued 25 summonses, received 63 complaints, handled 17 abandoned animals, and conducted 39 wellness checks.
