Jersey City Contemplates Keeping Dumpsters Out Of The Right-Of-Way After 21 Days

JERSEY CITY, NJ- A workaround that allows dumpsters to remain indefinitely on places like the sidewalk or street in Jersey City may soon be closed.

The Jersey City Municipal Council introduced an ordinance at its April 24 Council Meeting that would clarify that dumpsters are not allowed to be placed in the public right-of-way indefinitely.

According to Ward E Councilman James Solomon, the move comes after a situation involving a constituent of his near Columbus Drive and Varick Street and a dumpster in the public right-of-way nearby.

“He’s reached out to us for over a year about it, and we’ve looked into the ordinance,” Solomon said. “The ordinance says you can have a dumpster in the public right-of-way for seven days and then you can renew it two more times for a total of 21 days, but then it doesn’t clarify once you’ve exhausted the 21 days how long you have to wait to start the 21 days over again. So the office was interpreting it with sort of just a reasonable amount of time, but we figured, let’s put an actual number on it.”
