Jersey City police: Man killed in overnight shooting

A man died in an overnight shooting near New Jersey City University, according to authorities.

Jersey City police say the first reports of the shooting came in around 1 a.m. Tuesday. They say they found shell casings and recovered a weapon when they arrived at the scene on College Street.

The victim’s identity has not been released as of Tuesday afternoon. College Street remained blocked off by police Tuesday morning. Neighbors say they heard shots fired and then a black vehicle took off.

“I heard about six shots at first and they stopped for like five, 10 minutes, maybe quicker than that. And then they started up again,” said Jersey City resident Nigh Love. “This is a quiet block, there’s a college right there. Never would have expected this.”

“I’m really not surprised, it happens every day around here,” said resident Erick Perez.

New Jersey City University spokesperson Ira Thor released a statement to News 12:

“The university has spoken with the Jersey City Police Department and determined this is an isolated incident posing no threat to the university community.”
