About Metropolitan Detention Center

Metropolitan Detention Center has been compared to Red Onion State Prison in Wise County, Virginia because of similar conditions.

NPR describes the Metropolitan Detention Center as “hell on earth” and an “ongoing tragedy.”

Problems have plagued it since it opened in the 1990s. Conditions have been so horrible that some judges have refused to send people there. However, some high-profile inmates have been housed there, including R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sam Bankman-Fried.

The detention center is designed to hold prisoners who have not been arraigned, have been denied bail, or are awaiting trial. It is a holding place for inmates waiting to go to their designated “home” prison.

About Red Onion State Prison

Red Onion State Prison was completed in August 1998 and has been listed as one of the 15 worst prisons in the world and often referred to as “the worst of the worst” because of its harsh conditions and high-security measures.
