The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Gale warning for downstate New York following a series of deadly storms that spawned tornadoes and dust hazards across the Midwest and South . “Northwest winds 10 to 20 kt with gusts up to 35 kt and seas 2 to 4 feet possible,” the Gale warning stated.
The NWS issues such warnings when gale-force winds , which range from 34 to 47 knots, are expected or occurring. This particular alert covered Long Island Sound (west of Orient Point), the Connecticut River and New York Harbor.
A marine hazard risk map released by the NWS indicates that high winds and waves will impact the coastlines of southeast New York and parts of northern New Jersey this Friday, with the threat level marked as both “limited” and “elevated.”

Mariners in these waters have been urged by the NWS to exercise extreme caution. “Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility. Low visibility will make navigation difficult. Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for hazardous conditions,” they advised…
