Panic at Jersey City fireworks show triggered stampede, ‘mayhem’

A panic near the waterfront in Jersey City during Friday night’s fireworks display touched off what some called a chaotic stampede, leaving spectators rattled and confused.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear. As of Sunday morning, Jersey City officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Luis Salgado Clara, a local resident, was standing near the Katyń Memorial outside the Exchange Place PATH station with his 5-year-old daughter when people around him started “screaming, like panic-screaming.”…
